Toshiba has improved the software for its high-performance LiDAR sensor and developed technology that can track objects such as vehicles and people with 99.9% accuracy.

Japan, 26 September 2023 Toshiba announced it has improved the software for its high-performance LiDAR sensor and developed technology that can track objects such as vehicles and people with 99.9% accuracy. By processing two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) data obtained from lidar using artificial intelligence (AI), it was demonstrated that people and other objects can be recognized with high accuracy even at night without lighting. At the same time, Toshiba also developed technology to eliminate the effects of rain and fog. The company aims to put it into practical use in 2025 for infrastructure monitoring purposes, etc.

Normally, to track an object, the angle of view and frame rate of LiDAR and camera must be precisely synchronized. However, there were issues with improving recognition accuracy, such as errors occurring when correcting discrepancies between the two data.  This time, we were able to improve accuracy by developing technology to track and recognize objects using only 2D and 3D data acquired at the same time from the same lidar without using a camera.

Toshiba has also developed technology to eliminate the effects of rain and fog, which impair the accuracy of lidar measurements. Based on the characteristics of reflected light such as water, if it is determined to be rain or fog, the system successfully removes the entire waveform. The detection distance in environments with heavy rain or dense fog has been improved to more than double that of previous models.
