Japan’s Machine Tool Orders Remain Strong in April 2026, Up 45% YoY and Second-Highest on Record
The Japan Machine Tool Builders' Association reported that total global orders for Japanese machine tools reached JPY 188.97 billion (USD 1.18 billion) in April 2026. Although the figure declined 2.3% from March, it increased 45.1% year-on-year, marking the tenth consecutive month of YoY growth.
While slightly below the all-time high of JPY 193.47 billion recorded in March, April's result ranked as the second-highest monthly total on record. It also marked the 14th consecutive month in which total orders exceeded JPY 120 billion.
The strong performance reflects continued investment in manufacturing worldwide, particularly demand driven by artificial intelligence (AI), automation technologies, and industrial robotics.
Automotive and Aerospace Industries Continue to Drive Domestic Investment
Domestic orders totaled JPY 49.29 billion (USD 307.40 million) in April, down 2.4% from March but up 43.4% compared with the same month last year.
By Major Industry (MoM comparison):
- Automotive: up 34.0%
- Industrial machinery: down 14.6%
- Electronics & precision machinery: up 5.8%
- Aerospace, shipbuilding & transport equipment: up 30.7%
The strong growth in automotive and aerospace-related sectors highlights ongoing investment in advanced manufacturing and the increasing demand for machine tools capable of producing highly complex and precision-engineered components.

AI and Robotics Demand Continues to Support Overseas Orders
Foreign orders totaled JPY 139.68 billion (USD 871.19 million) in April, down 2.3% from March but up 45.8% year-on-year, extending YoY growth to 19 consecutive months.

Orders reached ¥76.27 billion (USD 475.69 million), up 1.6% MoM and 58.1% YoY
- China: ¥53.33 billion (USD 332.64 million), up 3.9% MoM
- India: ¥7.66 billion (USD 47.76 million), down 34.3% MoM
- Thailand: ¥1.35 billion (USD 8.44 million), down 39.0% MoM
Europe
Orders totaled ¥20.28 billion (USD 126.49 million), down 9.4% MoM but up 47.2% YoY
North America
Orders stood at ¥41.06 billion (USD 256.07 million),down 4.7% MoM but up 28.2% YoY
- United States: ¥35.80 billion (USD 223.32 million), down 8.8% MoM
The report noted that demand for manufacturing equipment related to AI, robotics, and factory automation remains a key growth driver for the global machine tool industry. These sectors are expected to continue supporting capital investment and help offset uncertainties stemming from geopolitical developments and international market volatility.
