Thailand’s January 2025 Auto Production Plunges 24.63% Amid Domestic and Export Decline

Thailand's total vehicle production in January 2025 stood at 107,103 units, marking a sharp decline of 24.63% compared to January 2024. The drop was observed in both domestic and export production, with vehicle exports hitting their lowest level in 33 months.

February 24, 2025 - Mr. Surapong Phaisitpattanapong, advisor to the chairman and spokesman of the FTI's Automotive Industry Club, revealed the following production figures for January 2025:

Total car production

The total number of vehicles produced in January 2025 was 107,103 units, down 24.63% year-on-year but up 0.20% from December 2024. The decline was due to a 31.78% drop in domestic production and a 21.10% decline in export production.

Total production of 107,103 vehicles in January 2025, composed of:

- Passenger cars: 35,714 units, 31.98% decrease (YoY) 

  • Internal Combustion Engine (ICE):  15,970 units, down 51.09% 
  • Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV): 1,665 units, an increase of 155.37% 
  • Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV): 2,165 units, showing a 439.90% increase.
  • Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV): 15,914 units, down 15.36%

- Buses under 10 tons and over 10 tons were not produced in January 2025.
- Trucks: 71,389 units, down 20.31% (YoY)
- 1 Ton Pickup trucks: 70,604 units, down 18.65% (YoY)

  • Single-Cab Pickups: 10,273 units, a decrease of 36.14%
  • Double-Cab Pickups: 45,580 units, down 17.81%
  • Pickup Passenger Vehicles (PPVs): 14,751 units, down 3.26%

- Pickup trucks less than 5 tons – over 10 tons: 785 units, down 71.91% (YoY)

Car production for export

In January 2025, the car production for export totaled 75,044 units, representing 70.07% of the total production, a decrease of  21.10% (YoY)

- Passenger cars produced for export totaled 13,954 units, a decrease of 49.42% (YoY)
- One-ton pickup truck for export at 61,090 units, decreased 9.52% (YoY)

  • Single-Cab Pickups: 5,244 units, a decrease of 18.00%
  • Double-Cab Pickups: 42,668 units, down 11.68%
  • Pickup Passenger Vehicles (PPVs): 13,178 units, increased 2.84%

Car production for domestic sales

In January 2025, there were 32,059 units produced for domestic sales, representing 29.93% of the whole production, representing a 31.78% decline (YoY)

- Passenger cars for domestic sales totaled 21,760 units, a decrease of 12.68% (YoY)
- One-ton pickup truck at 9,514 units, 50.62% decrease (YoY)

  • Single-Cab Pickups: 5,029 units, a decrease of 48.11%
  • Double-Cab Pickups: 2,912 units, down 59.23%
  • Pickup Passenger Vehicles (PPVs): 1,573 units, decreased 35.37%

- Buses under 10 tons and over 10 tons were not produced in January 2025. 
-  Pickup trucks at 785 units, declined 71.91% (YoY)
