Japan, May 28, 2024 - Toyota Motor Corporation announced two new engines under development to support electrification. These engines are a 1500cc and a 2000cc four-cylinder engine. Compared to conventional engines, the volume has been reduced by 10-20% while improving fuel efficiency and output. They will also meet the emissions standards that will come into force in the second half of the 2020s in various countries and regions. By combining these engines with motors and batteries, it will be possible to take advantage of the strengths of both electric mechanisms and engines. Additionally, they will be compatible with biofuels and hydrogen, contributing to decarbonization.

Since 2017, Toyota has equipped its vehicles with engines incorporating the concepts of the “Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA),” promoting the standardization of parts and design. This time, the company is developing an engine from scratch suited to the electrification era.

Two types of new engines—normal and turbocharged—are being developed for the 1500cc engine. The new engine has better fuel efficiency than the existing TNGA-designed 1500cc engine, and when turbocharged, it achieves output almost equal to that of the TNGA-designed 2500cc engine.

Meanwhile, a new 2000cc engine with a turbocharger is currently under development, which will have better fuel efficiency and power output than the TNGA-designed turbocharged 2400cc engine.

Toyota promotes “making better cars with motorsports as a starting point.” Based on the combustion technology honed in motorsports, they have combined digital technologies such as model-based development (MBD) to achieve an optimal design. By assuming a combination of motors and battery systems developed for electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid vehicles (HVs), they have achieved selection and concentration of engine functions.

The two new engines are small, allowing for greater installation flexibility. By improving fuel efficiency and power output compared to previous models, it is expected that they will replace all existing engines. Toyota plans to use them not only for its vehicles but also for other companies. Although development has just begun, the company plans to introduce them before new emission regulations come into effect in various countries and regions.
